Because Walking in the Light is a Battle: This Really Got Me

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.       1 John 1:7

The beeping of my alarm wakens me and I stumble to the bathroom.

I flip the light switch and the light makes the darkness flee. Darkness can’t handle light and the light of the world, His Spirit, lives in me.

Does darkness flee when I am around?

Do I walk in the light as Jesus is in the light? Is there real fellowship there or do I allow bitterness to keep me from fellowship?

Do I cling to the dark afraid to let go – afraid that someone may know I am a depraved sinner too?

The darkness of the soul is painfully isolating. The enemy of my soul longs to keep me silent about my hidden darkness. He blackmails me into silence. I buy his lies that I alone am broken, depraved, unfeeling. So I hide those rotting parts of in darkness, afraid of the light.

Afraid of the light? Afraid of healing? Afraid of what the healing will mean.

God’s healing shakes me up and leaves me unsettled – because I never knew God was that kind or good or gracious. Yes gracious to me and to others.

The healing is a slow life-long process. But as I am being healed, then I can walk in the light, in fellowship. I can leave behind bitterness, pride, judgement on myself and others. I can embrace diversity founded on the truth of God’s Word. There in the light I am full of truth and grace. It is in the dark that I only have truth or I only have grace – neither is enough by itself.

So I wage war against the enemy and my sinful nature and strive to live every day in the light of grace and truth.

How do you strive to walk in the light instead of darkness? What helps you win this battle?

Also link up a blog post and let me know what God is doing in your life. I can’t wait to read about it!

  1. “I buy his lies that I alone am broken, depraved, unfeeling. So I hide those rotting parts of in darkness, afraid of the light.”

This spoke to me. I need to ask myself how often am I buying his lies?

  2. So glad that spoke to you. God is good to remind us there are lies and we must not listen to them.
